It worked well except that the takeup reel would jitter? I had the service manual with a corresponding modification, but, was too lazy to carry out that work. Mine had the power amplifiers built in, but, I never used them.

Record and playback sounded very good. I got an ASC machine later that easily outperformed the Revox. The ASC was matching my 18cm reels better as well, so the Revox had to leave. Considering the age Revox vs. ASC the Revox still held up well. Reviewed Apr 02nd, by Chris Ingram. I received my first A77 a MkII from my father, who also owned a home studio with three professional Ampex decks, and a Wollensack portable. To me the A77 was the classiest piece; the one you have on a shelf in your living room.

It runs smoothly and the sound is warm and lush. I now have a Mk IV, and find it just as exceptional and classy. I have also owned a Tascam 32, which I loved, but the A77 is the one for a classy gentleman gentlewoman's posh pad. Obviously, this is not a technical review. I lack that expertise. This is just my opinion, based on my senses. Reviewed Dec 06th, by norman gates. I had fixed a number of these machines back in the s when I was an electronic repairman. The previous technician had butchered a lot of these decks and since I was able to order new parts easily , I got many of them to work.

I have aligned and adjusted them levels, bias, equalization, head alignment and replaced caps that have gone bad. I still own one of these, made many recordings on it, played some tapes recently on it-and it has such a fine, clear sound. Very nice tape recorder to have unfortunatly lost many years ago Have since bought another A77 MKIII and have servo board problems I am looking for a circuit diagram of this board however the manual in HiFi engine here does not have the I presume a later board info The board I have has a Trim Pot and Variable resistor trimmer There are no IC Chips on the board just transistors about 8 of them and one metal power transistor on a heatsink.

Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks Paul S. Reviewed Jul 02nd, by frankone Reviewed Mar 07th, by Ian Thompson. What a fantastic resource! Thanks so much for letting me find you.. Having fired it up recently, the capstan motor runs very slowly, so I'm guessing there's a dried-up electrolytic cap on the motor control board or some such.

Any clues before I set about it? Reviewed Feb 17th, by guest. The A77 is, in my view, the most elegant design. This 10 reel deck is physically compact and the teak cabinet is classic.

The deck has excellent sound, if recapped and recalibrated. The transport lacks advanced logic so one does need to exercise a bit of patience with the controls or risk spilling tape. Mine includes Dolby noise reduction which has come in handy a few times as some tapes that I have transferred to digital for friends were Dolby encoded.

MkIII lays very well already - with very old tapes I got while buying reels - can't wait to get some recording done. I was raised an analog kid and this medium suits me right down to the bone. It just keeps going I think it's either the photocell or the amplifier that follows it.

Problem is, the manual posted here seems to be a different control board with all different components on it. One of the two transistors, a BCBm doesn't appear to be the original but who knows. Two questions I guess Your machine is a German made mk3 - Manufactured between Aug - Aug 2. The manual available on Hifi Engine as far as I can ascertain, is ver 10 which was the latest and certainly is applicable to your machine.

Ver numbers are in small print on the first few pages bottom right corner. It is important that Q is the correct one. More importantly that they are inserted correctly - 3 holes follow exactly transistor pin out ie no crossing over of leads or undue bending.

Look at the picture in the manual and in particular which way the little 'pip' emitter on the transitor case is pointing. One is at '7 o'clock' and the otehr at '4 o'clock'. These transistors should be tested in a proper transistor tester. Peak are excellent but most good quality DMM's have a basic test facility. These transistors are not expensive to replace and are easily available - perhaps just replace them with new ones.

It is therefore, necessary that the original sound event provides an exceptionally wide dynamic range signal to noise ratio of at least 65 to 70 dB.

The DOLBY noise reduction system operates with a dynamic filter whose charac- teristics are determined by the constantly varying sound levels. To ensure a play- back performance which is an exact mirror image of the record process, it is absolutely essential that the record and playback levels are equal.

This is achieved by a special gain calibrating circuit record calibration which enables the operator to compensate for differences in sensitivity between different tape oxides or even between batch differences of the same oxide.

Record Calibration prior to recording The following calibration procedure is to be performed prior to each recording. Close record level controls 15 and 17 by turning them fully anticlockwise.
