Fostex dmt-8vl manual

Sadly, neither of these useful improvements can be retrofitted to the original DMT8. Another point to note is that although you can replace the supplied Mb drive with one of a larger capacity to provide more recording time, and fit it yourself, the DMT8VL is not supplied driveless; you must buy the unit including the Mb drive, then replace it with the size of your choice. This of course leaves you with a spare Mb drive, although it's worth talking to your dealer, as they may be able to fit a new drive and take care of the old one for you.

Central to the recording section of the DMT8VL is a large custom plasma display that incorporates the eight track meters, the stereo output meters, the time readout and various other relevant parameters.

MTC is available in all the usual formats, and includes an offset capability. The inner part of the wheel is for moving in fine increments, and repeatedly scrubs over a short section of audio as it's being adjusted.

The outer wheel is also used for data editing. Because this section is very similar to that of the DMT8, there's no need to look at it in any more detail at this point; check out the DMT8 review from last December's issue for more detail.

A simple change of colour would have made this rather easier. Even the transport buttons are all the same beige colour — at the very least, the Record button should be red, as it was on the original DMT8. Admittedly, it doesn't take long to get used to where things are, but a little thought at the design stage would have made life easier for the new user.

Channels one and two will also accept unbalanced mics on jacks, but being unbalanced, there's no provision for phantom power. Moving it clockwise, on the other hand, picks up the channel input jack so that external inputs can be added to the mix when mixing down to stereo.

When recording, the source will be set to input, but for mixing, the source will be the recorded track. A single fader controls both left and right channels of the main stereo mix, and a headphone outlet is positioned just below the fader, on the front edge of the unit. No aux send level controls are fitted, but as effects units invariably have their own input level controls, this is no great loss. Punching in is accomplished by holding down Play and then jabbing Record, and punching out by pushing Play or Stop.

The system works fine, but for marking sections on the fly, I feel there are too many button pushes required — ideally there should be just one button to store the In point and another to store the Out point. Change shipping region. Listing Sold. Shipped From. Joined Reverb.

There are the great features of digital recording like cut, paste, MIDI clock and device ID, and noiseless bouncing of tracks. Good Points Digital editing: cutting and pasting, instant access to different songs or locate points.

A hard disk is included, and uncompressed, 16 bit digital sound is a big step up from tapes. Bad Points No mid eq on each track. Also, record at a medium level on the display to leave yourself a little headroom. Following their methodology of proving a format in a stationary model first and then on to portable solutions, Fostex's next move was the release of the PD-6 in late , a 6 track location sound recorder utilising a revolutionary 8cm 'mini' DVD-RAM disc, developed with input from many of the users of PD-2s and PD-4s.

While brining non-linear digital recording to film and TV sound mixers, the PD-6 allowed Fostex provide them with a whole new post-production workflow saving productions many hours in import and processing time not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs. The end of saw Fostex release the FR-2, a two track recorder that utilises their digital multitrack experience and couples it with their non-linear feature film solutions, providing cost effective audio recording direct to Compact Flash and PCMCIA hard drives for TV, sound effects, reporting and budget conscious film production.

As to be expected being a division of Foster Electric Co. Fostex have always been keen to research other business areas and opportunities in the audio market and for the past three years have been working on a project that has culminated in a range of digital audio networking products presented in a new brand known as 'NetCIRA by Fostex'.

Successful installations of systems into commercial and office buildings in Japan in conjunction with Kajima Corporation - one of Japan's largest construction companies — have seen a keen start to this new venture. While NetCIRA products will find many applications in both live and broadcast audio where dense signal distribution is required, Fostex feel that the main market will be for installed sound providing solutions with diffused control and they will be complementing the range with ceiling speakers and other accessories which are part of the Foster core manufacturing competence.

While Fostex still service the high-end of this market with their speaker component business as previously mentioned, the newest advantage to the company has been Japan's change from on-shore to off-shore manufacturing over the past ten years. The Foster group have manufacturing facilities around the world, the most significant of which is in China, now employing over seventeen thousand people.

Although some of Fostex's professional products still require assembly in Japan, more and more products are now being designed with a view to China production and currently fairly complex products such as the MR-8, FR-2, and MR16HD digital recorders are made in and shipped directly to distributors from China. Fostex Company now have distribution in more than fifty territories and continues to be a major name in recording from the home musician to the television station; the recording studio to the duplication house.

As the market has moved from analogue to digital, Fostex have developed solutions that perfectly match their user's requirements for yesterday, today and tomorrow. What does the Fostex DMT-8 manual include?

Why is it worth reading? Warranty and details concerning the maintenance of the product It is a good idea to attach a document of purchase of the device to this page of the manual. If something bad happens while using a Fostex DMT-8, you will have a set of documents that are required to obtain warranty.

Important note - be sure to read the Fostex DMT-8 at least once If you do not want to read brochures every time concerning a Fostex DMT-8 or other products, it is enough to read them once only - just after buying the device.

It Starts With Speaker Components Fostex was established to brand high quality speaker components from Foster and sell them direct to consumers and dealers in the Japanese marketplace. Entry to Multitracking In , joined by a new band of engineers, Fostex decided to enter the professional recording industry which was then on the verge of spurning the 'home recording' category. Developments in Multitrack Recording Innovations continued to come at a fast pace from the Fostex development team.

The Move to Digial Sadly some would say, the demise of analogue tape-based products was inevitable as the digital revolution progressed.
